Newsflash

Spring is now approaching fast so this means more snow in the Mountains. Joan and I are getting ready for our upcoming gig at THE MARKET AT 3 SISTERS BISTRO here in town. This is an excellent cafe style setting which features the opportunity to enjoy an evening meal during the show.  The show starts at 6:30 on Saturday March 23rd and the $10.00 admission includes 1 drink!

My visit to Toronto was most excellent and included a lot of 'family time' which was long overdue. The trip also included a visit to Orchard Park Elementary School in Burlington where I played some tunes, answered a ton of questions and signed autograpghs for the Grade 3 and 4 classes. The set included  The Good Old Hockey Game as a tribute to Stompin Tom who had passed away just days before.

On March 12th I got together with my brother, Gary 17 of Toronto Moon fame along with my good bud Don Hulse to do some sets at the Dora Keogh on the Danforth in TO. A great time was had by all and we were also fortunate to Have Pete Otis do a set.

That is the news for now, but, I would be very interested in hearing from you should you require some musical entertainment for your next special event. I have a good catalogue of songs, both my own and some killer covers which I can tailor to meet your needs. And I can also get a 'little help from my friends' like Joan and my buddy Ray Reddekop should you require more than a solo artist.

There are a number of ways for you to listen to my songs: You can preview a one minute clip of all 10 songs by going to Ric's Music on this site.

SINCE WE WERE YOUNG   A bit of  a sad song I guess, this was originally written sometime in the late 80’s probably 1988 as Clay was just a kid. I was in a bit of funk and got to thinking about all of the people that had come and gone in my life, the good times and the hard times. It was written for my dear friend, Sandy, my teenage sweetheart, who basically broke my heart when we split up. Boy, we were so young. This song is also about all of the other people who had been a part of my life though the late 60’s and 70’s, great folks all. The thing was, with a couple of exceptions, I rarely saw them  as I had been out West for over a decade and was busy with so much stuff. When I went out to Bakerstreet to do the beds Robbie and I played it through a bunch of times and when the time came to lay it down, well,  he really nailed this song with his guitar work. I remember saying, ‘that is exactly how I have been hearing it’, but of course I couldn’t play it like he does. The addition of his mandolin was perfect. I also really like what Rick did with the piano on this one, the little flicks give it a youthful touch . Paul also added the magic mix to this one!  I carried this one around for a long time and would pluck it out now and then when no one was around. I originally played it with a D chord then the same D chord fingering on the 7th and 9th frets. Don’t ask me what those chords are called, but you can use the G and A . Even though we don’t see much of each other in person,  Sandy and I remain friends to this day. I believe that it is really fitting that this song also features the background vocals of Joan who has made such a huge contribution to the album and who has made my life complete.

D                                                                     G                                             D

When we were young                                     We had a love … burned like the sun

D                                                                     G                                             D

A love which filled the sky                               A love you said… would never die

A                                  D                                 A                                  D

But lately I’ve been thinking                             About how long it’s been

D                                 G                                 D                     G

Since I saw you laughing and crying             Since We Were Young

You said “I gotta go it won’t be long”               And “I love you”

But all the days turned to years                      And all my dreams… they drowned in tears.

But lately I’ve been thinking                             About how long it’s been

Since I saw you laughing and crying             Since We Were Young

And now I stand alone                                    Oh yes … I’m afraid so

But then you know me somehow                   Well, I just don’t know, no, I don’t know, no, I don’t know

But lately I’ve been thinking                             About how long it’s been

Since I saw you laughing and crying             Since We Were Young

Yes, lately I’ve been thinking                           About how long it’s been

Since I saw you laughing and crying             Since We Were Young

Since We Were Young

Since We Were Young

Since We Were Young

ALL KIND OF BLUES

Well, hell yah. I get the Blues now and then, don’t you? This one is so much fun for me cause it covers a ton of ground and is a gas to sing, especially with what the boys brought to the studio. I mean it just rocks. Robbie’s guitar work is simply to die for! The  roots of this one are back about 93 or so, but, it wasn’t finished until last year in the basement when I came up with the “One Too Many” and “Canmore Condominium”verses.  Here’s an interesting note, the “Cabos San Lucas Time Share” verse refers to a trip I went on to Cabos with my friends Bruce and Mary and with our dear friend Stephanie as tour guide. It was the first time I had ever been to Mexico and we just had a gas. The hotel had a swim up bar which I had never, ever experienced before. Anyhow, the only thing about the trip was that there were so many people on us all the time to buy timeshares that it really got to be a bit much. I will never forget the tour we did of one place, man, what a look when we said ‘no and where’s our Tequila and blankets’  If my memory serves me rightly, I think I jumped up and played a rendition of that verse one night. We were at a restaurant and  there was some dudes playing and I asked to borrow the guy’s guitar…, geez, Bruce, was that a dream? Sadly, our friend Stephanie passed away some time ago but whenever I sing the Cabos verse, she’s there. By the way, the picture of me ‘at the office’ on the About Ric page was taken during that trip and exactly captures the moment!

Don’t ask what the cords are. It’s the Blues.

I get up in the morning …I go to work …I pay my dues .. I’m a working jerk.

And now I got me …Them Working Man Blues.

When I get up in the morning mama … Got me them Working Man Blues.

The Boss says “jump”            I say “how high?” He says I want you jumpin, right to the sky.

And now I got me … Them Paycheck Blues.

Yah, when I get up in the morning mama … Got me them Pay Check Blues.

If I had a dollar … Or maybe two …I know exactly, what this boy would do.

Go down to the Hotel  …And buy a bottle or two.

But when I get home from the Hotel               Got me One Too Many Blues.

If I had a million … Dollars or two …I know exactly, what this boy would do.

Go down to Canmore …And buy a Condo or two

But when I get home from Canmore … Got me the Canmore Condominium Blues

Went down to Cabos … For a holiday           …Met a lovely senorita  …oh yah and 6 guys named Jose.

And now I got me …Those Timeshare Blues.

And when I get home from Cabs ..Got me those Cabos San Lucas Timeshare Blues

The Blues come and go …Or so they say …But lately it seems … the Blues are

here to stay.

And now I got me …All Kinds of Blues

When I get up in the morning mama … Got me  All Kinds of Blues

Yah, when I get up in the morning mama … Got me All Kinds of Blues

When I get up in the morning mama …

Got me those Working Man … Paycheck … One Too Many …

Canmore Condominium … Cabos San Lucas Timeshare

…..    All Kinds of Blues

Oh Yah!

SULLY’S SONG  Well this one is Paul’s favourite and certainly one of mine as well. I have been goofing around with these cords for a long, long time and I had a ‘feeling’ for what I wanted to say but struggled to find the right beat, the right words… well, then one day, maybe a couple of years now, I was jammin with Peter and I finally got the right tempo and we had some fun with it. Some of the words were there too. Then, one night, again all alone in the basement I started saying, what image can bring the right words out .. and wham, like a piano outta the sky comes the image of my bud, Pat, getting outta bed to go to work, early in the morning and heading off down the 1A highway between Canmore and Exshaw where the cement plant is. At that moment the song pretty much wrote itself, although I did go back to it to refine the lyrics. The thing is that Pat is really a metaphor for a lot of guys and gals who do the deed day after day to keep their family secure. The thing about Pat, or, as he is better known in these parts as Sully, well,  Sully he  likes to make music, good music with a bunch of mutual friends who go by the handle of Sully’s Garage, cause that’s where it all startedin Sully’s garage, “singing out loud on a Saturday Night”  I played this track for Pat a while back and I have to say that the moment was very touching for the both of us. We’ve been friends a long, long time and I think a fitting tribute to a very decent man, a good man, and in turn to all the good men and womenout there who do what needs to be done.  Originally Paul thought that this song could stand on its own with just Robbie’s guitars and he was sort of right. I kept thinking that it needed more but didn’t want to insult him. In the end Paul gathered the boys back up and I think that with the back end of Geoff and Doug we really got this one right! Oh yah, he really ironic thing is that now I find myself “driving down the 1A” although not at dawn, I’m doing the afternoon shift at Exshaw School, and, like Sully, I’m singin’ out loud! Enjoy and here’s to you Sully!

SULLY’S SONG - Words and Music By Ric Proctor   - Arranged by Robbie Steininger

Copyright May 01 2007

E                         E on 6th fret             E on 8th fret

Sully gets up in the morning and pulls on his boots

Gets in his truck and drives that Exshaw Route

Running down the 1A every day at dawn

Hey there Sully …    what’s going on?

Sully’s working for that Union pay

He really, really likes it that way

He’s working hard for his   … family

He’s a lot like you and like me.

Sully he load the rock on the mountain

100 tons a days          but he ain’t really counting

Sully he load the rock on the mountain

20 years or more     but he ain’t really countin’

20 years or more     but he ain’t really countin’

Some say Sully is the King of Exshaw

But the way he feels lately, he’s really not sure

Working and working, every day

Is he working his life right away

Sully he load the rock on the mountain

100 tons a days      but he ain’t really counting

Sully he load the rock on the mountain

20 years or more     but he ain’t really countin’

20 years or more      but he ain’t really countin’

You know Sully he likes a good time, oh yah.

Some say he’s crazy, I say he’s doing just fine

Singing out loud on a Saturday Night

Hey there Sully you’ doing all right, all right.

Sully he load the rock on the mountain

100 tons a days      but he ain’t really counting

Sully he load the rock on the mountain

20 years or more     but he ain’t really countin’

20 years or more      but he ain’t really countin’

SPOTLIGHT  Oh, this is probably becoming my favourite one and is certainly the oldest song on the album. I wrote it in 1975 on a beach in Corsica where Marilyn and I hung out for a month or so. What can I say, it was a magic time and I had fallen head over heals … It’s a silly little love song, I guess, but, it works. I have been thinking that this will be agreat ‘wedding song’ Robbie’s mandolin certainly adds to this one and Paul’s decision to add me to the background vocals was bang on. I first sang this version, that is with accompaniment, at the memorial service for my Mom on Valentine’s Day of this year. Sadly, she didn’t get to hear this song in person, so, now, whenever I sing it, it’s for her.

SPOTLIGHT  - Words and Music by Ric Proctor - Copyright April 20, 2007

Am             Am on 3rd Fret                         Am on 5th Fret             Am on 3rd Fret

The Sun came out this morning               It caught me all alone

Quite without a warning                         Like a fire or an ocean storm

G                        D                                           A

I Tried to hide                                           But it found me everywhere

Like some Spotlight                                 For some one who would care.

I saw you on the corner                           Blue ribbon in your chestnut hair

I couldn’t go no further                            Couldn’t stop my desperate stare

You tried to hide                                      But I found you everywhere

Like some Spotlight                                 On some one who would care

Solo

You tried to hide                                      But I found you everywhere

Like some Spotlight                                 On some one who would care

The Sun is going down slowly               Two lovers walkin’ on the sand

I can never be lonely                               When I am holdin’ your sweet hand

And now the Sun shines                        Brighter every day

Like some Spotlight                                 On lovers at their play

And now the Sun shines                        Brighter every day

Like some Spotlight                                 On lovers at their play
